Quick Update

Friday, June 9th, 2006

I’ll be out at eBay Live next week. Hope to see some of you all there.

Went running this morning. I never used to look forward to running. I must sound crazy.
I’m getting better on biking as well.

Swimming is more challenging, but I’ll get there. I’m considering joining a Masters class.

Only 30 days until Triangle Triathlon.

Back in Raleigh

Sunday, June 4th, 2006

Did some traveling this last week so I’m glad I was mostly able to stay on my training schedule. I was away mornings (Wednesday, Thursday, Friday), but was able to train Wednesday and Thursday. Thursday night we stayed out until almost midnight and when I woke up Friday at 6 to work out I decided to just sleep in, knowing I had a redeye that night.

That turned out pretty well… yesterday I got in at about 10am… picked up my bike from the shop, and took a nap for a little while.
Later on around 6:30 I went for a nice bike ride.

Hobson/Page and Cornwallis are pretty good roads to ride on. Cornwallis is so smooth and there is a nice bike lane. Hobson/Page is just empty. Hardly any cars on the weekend. TW Alexander aren’t bad either - there are a couple of cars but it’s easy for them to pass you. All of these roads are long stretches of uninterrupted riding, though, which is great.

Today I have an hour run on tap…

Interesting Route Site

RouteSlip.com

Just found another free site for plotting and saving training routes. You have to sign up to try it, but it’s free so why not.
These types of sites are nice when you want to plan a training ride or run for a certain number of miles in advance…

Best Beginner Triathlon Sites

Sunday, May 7th, 2006

I’ve been spending time in the evenings reading a lot of these two sites:

BeginnerTriathlete.com

RoadBikeReview.com

Both have very active communities and are really helpful to people just getting started. What are your favorite sites?

Cool Training Site for Runners/Cyclists

GMaps Pedometer

Google Maps rocks. I found this cool site where on Google Maps you can plan your route and have it show you how long it will be.
You plot points, and it measures your route for you.

Very cool for running and cycling.

Beginner Triathlon Training

Sunday, May 7th, 2006

So for the past 6 weeks I’ve been training for a triathlon. I’ve never done anything like this before, and I’ve never generally been all that “athletic”…. It’s been really interesting though as

Do you know anyone else who has signed up for a triathlon without owning a bike? Well, I did. I now have a 49cm LeMond Reno road bike which I’ve ridden about 12-15 times now. It’s pretty cool.

I’ve bought 5-6 books on the subject and used some to build a training plan for myself in preparation for the event. Just a list of things that I’ve acquired in preparation for the last 3 months:

  • Aqua Sphere Swim Googles (something like this)
  • Adidas Running Shoes
  • LeMond Reno bike
  • Trek saddle bag (small)
  • 2 pairs biking shorts
  • 1 long-sleeve Discovery Channel jersey I found 40% off at my local bike shop, Cycling Spoken Here - haven’t worn it yet, but I just got it a week ago.
  • Giro helmet
  • Shimano SPD pedals - not road bike specific, but seem enough for me
  • Nike cycling shoes
  • Rudy Project Kerosense sunglasses - just got these after my $7 gas station sunglasses broke…
  • Adidas cycling gloves - no velcro on these, just slide on and go

Probably a couple of other things too.
